Introduction

This spectacular 60km hike culminates at the last refuge of the Incas as they fled from their Spanish conquerors. You will experience amazing mountain scenery as well as abundant native wildlife

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco to Chiquisca

We leave Cusco at 06:00h and drive to the starting point of the trek at Cachora, an Andean community located four hours from Cusco. A two-hour climb brings us to the ‘Abra Capuliyoc‘ where we will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Apurimac River Canyon. We then descend to Chiquisca, where we will set up camp and spend the night.

  • Meals: L,D
  • Cachora - 2800m.s.l (9184ft)
  • Abra Capuliyoc - 2750m.s.l (9020ft)

Day 2: Chiquisca to Choquequirao

We leave Chiquisca at 06:00h, head down to Rosalina Beach, and then cross the Apurimac River and climb towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging up a steep slope. In Santa Rosa, we take a half an hour break, and enjoy some Cambray (a refreshing local sugar cane extract) and then climb towards our lunch spot in Marampata. After lunch, we head to the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, where we will set up camp and have some free time to explore the terraces and buildings. When the sun starts to set, you might want to sit, contemplate the canyon, and see if you can spot some condors.

  • Meals: B,L,D
  • Choquequirao - 3103m.s.l (10178ft)

Day 3: Choquequirao to Rosalina Beach

We start with a guided tour of the entire Choquequirao complex; the ‘Hanan’ (high parts) and the ‘Urin‘ (lower parts), and some areas still covered in wild foliage, ready for restoration to the way they were during Inca times. After the tour, we take an easy walk back to Santa Rosa for lunch. Another two-hour descent will bring us to Rosalina Beach for a refreshing dip in the waters of the Apurimac River. We camp and dine here.

  • Meals: B,L,D
  • Rosalina Beach - 1450m.s.l (4756ft)

Day 4: Rosalina Beach to Cachora

Appropriate clothing along this hike

Hiking pants and T-shirts are recommended during the day, eventually complemented by sweaters, fleeces and jackets in the evening. We recommend convertible hiking pants and / or shorts as some parts of the route run at low altitude and warm weather. It is also very convenient to have light raingear available in the daypack (rain poncho or jacket and/or rain pants) as the weather changes easily and rains can suddenly occur. At night, warm clothing is required along the route. The rest of necessary implements are included in the “What we recommend that you bring” list.

Climate

Cusco’s climate is divided into two differentiated seasons: the rainy season, from November to April (the heaviest rainfalls occurring usually between January – March); and the dry season, from May to October. The dry season is colder, so temperatures can drop to below 0 degrees at night.

Along the route to Choquequirao, temperatures range from 15-25ºC during the day if it’s sunny, to 10-20ºC during the day if not sunny. Temperatures drop in the evening and at night, especially in Choquequirao, at a higher elevation, reaching 5ºC although rarely below. Warm clothes are hence however necessary for this hike.
